Idalin Bobe

Founder and Social Justice Techie, TechActivist.Org

Idalin Bobé believes in order to overcome racism, sexism, poverty and other issues impacting our world, one must first understand the power dynamics in our society.

Idalin is founder of TechActivist.Org, a non-profit providing free technical training and political education workshops to working-class youth, activists, and disruptors.

Coming from a poor working-class community in North Philadelphia, PA, Idalin witnessed firsthand how the people most impacted by social ills were and still are on the losing side of the digital, educational, and economic divide. That understanding led her to dedicate herself to work directly with organizations that are focused on social change and are part of the communities they serve. Through her tech literacy programs, Idalin provides hands-on workshops introducing people to Digital Media, Digital Security, Open Source, Web Development, and emerging technology like Virtual Reality.

Prior to TechActivist.Org, Idalin was a founding partner of Black Girls CODE where she helped the organization grow from 15 students to 2,500 students and launch 15 nation-wide chapters. In December 2013 she left the organization and was recruited to serve as a Senior IT Consultant and Global Social Justice Lead at ThoughtWorks, a global IT firm, where she provided tech support to international grassroots organizations in over 8 countries.

Idalin has impacted thousands of people with her tech literacy and empowerment workshops, and has been recognized as a 2017 Changemaker in Technology for Good from the New Leaders Council. She was also recognized in the 40 Under 40: Tech Diversity – Silicon Valley in 2016, was added to TheRoot100 list in 2016, and was given the Aaron Swartz Award for being a change agent in open source education by ThoughtWorks in 2015. While she feels honored to receive such recognition, Idalin knows there is much work still to be done to bring better lives to many people. She is only getting started.

Idalin received her Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and Applied Statistics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and is a proud alumna of the Lokey Graduate School of Business at Mills College, where she received her Master’s degree in Business Administration with a focus on technology and human-centered design.
